Biographical Information
Growing up:
For the past 39 years, Steve Corker has been a resident of Spokane and has spent a total of 50 years in the Inland
Northwest. He was raised in Walla Walla, moved to Eugene, Oregon, and in 1959 he graduated from high school in
Portland, Oregon. In 1963, he graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Political Science. At Stanford,
he was a scholarship student, class president and president of the political science honor society.
Steve spent the next four years with the Eisenhower People to People Program as Director of University Affairs and
then as Director of the International Travel Program. In 1967, he became the Manger of Marketing for Trans International Airlines.
Coming to Spokane:
Steve came to Spokane in 1970 and served as Vice president of Sales for Educational Travel Company, now known as
International Ambassadors, Inc. In 1978, he founded Corker, Farmer, Sullivan, Inc., a full service marketing, advertising and
public relations agency and in 1982 merged with Coons, Shotwell & Associates, Inc. The successor firm, Coons, Corker &
Associates, Inc. was, for many years, Spokane’s largest advertising agency.
Many may also remember Steve from his days on the KGA radio show with Richard Clear. For over five years, he and
Richard discussed and debated current events and local political issues.
In 1997 Steve became the Vice President of Futurepast, Inc., an international management consulting firm based in
the Washington D.C. area and he continues to serve in that same capacity.
Spokane City Government:
From January 2000 to December 2004, Steve served on the Spokane City Council. The citizens of
Spokane again elected him to serve as a member of the Spokane City Council in 2007.
He served four years as a member and Secretary of Spokane International Airport's Board of Directors; four years as a
member of Spokane's Parks and Recreation Board; two years as a Director of the Spokane Regional Health District;
and two years on the Board of the Council on Aging and Long-Term Care of Eastern Washington.
Steve was the Founding Commissioner of the Spokane Arts commission in 1977. Steve was a founding member
and is now the Secretary of the North Monroe Business District.
Teaching:
Since 1981, Steve has also been an educator. He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor/Lecturer in Gonzaga
University's School of Business, has taught graduate courses at Whitworth College and has also taught at
Fairchild's Park University and Spokane Community College.
Public Service:
Steve’s public service contributions are numerous. He served as President of Allied Arts of Spokane and as a
member of the United Way of Spokane, serving as Vice President of Communications for two years and as Chair
of the Metropolitan Division for three years.
He was President of Cancer Patient Care of Spokane County and served as Vice President of the American Red
Cross local chapter. He has served the Boards of the American Cancer Society, the American Heart Association,
and served as the Chair of the Heart Walk in 1993.
Steve was one of the early organizers of Neighbor Days, a celebration of the arts, held each July since 1977.
He was the Chair of the Spokane Olympic Torch Relay Committee, hosted in Spokane in 2002.
Two Washington State Governors and one Oregon State Governor have appointed Steve to important statewide
committees - the Washington State Council for the Prevention of Child Abuse and the Governor's State Committee on Youth.
His public service experience has been highlighted by being named United Way's Washington State Volunteer
of the Year in 1991; KPBX Public Radio's Volunteer of the Year in 1998; and in 2000, he received the Exchange
Club's Golden Deeds Award for lifetime service to this community. He has also received special recognition for
his volunteer activities from the Chase Youth Commission, The Easter Seal Society, KSPS Public Television
and the March of Dimes.
Today:
Currently, in addition to full time service on the Spokane City Council, Steve serves as
a Vice President of the Northeast Youth Centers and is a deacon and high school Sunday school teacher at
Country Homes Christian Church. He is the proud father of a son, Dalton, a graduate of Western Washington
University and now pursuing his MBA, and a daughter, Miranda, a graduate of Williams College.
For fun, Steve is President of the HASSIE antique auto club and enjoys babysitting his two grandchildren.
Steve's goals are simple to understand:
to improve police and fire protection services;
to continue efforts to insure an open City government;
continued repair of our streets and infrastructure;
creating new jobs that will develop a strong economy;
stop government waste; and
restore confidence in the strong mayor form of government.
